The city has already been enunciated three times for the capital of: Western Roman Empire, Kingdom of the Ostrogoths and Byzantine Exarchate. The rich cultural heritage of mosaics and monuments from the Roman and Byzantine era, eight of which are listed as World Heritage - UNESCO, make the city famous.

 Ravenna was the first city in Italy, which began its preparations for the candidature  in October 2010. The working group of Ravena2019 is coordinated by Alberto Cassano, who uses only local brainpower, and has set "ambitious cultural challenge" to combine the rich cultural heritage of the city with innovative cultural events.

The logo for the candidature is based on the idea of the future with great size of 2019, the enthusiasm of the townspeople - expressed with an exclamation point on which turns the digit unit and national identity in the condensed in a mosaic, which raises the unit and makes it amazing.

 In April 2013 Sofia and South-West Region and Ravenna signed a memorandum in the framework of the European Capital of Culture initiative.
