Perugia - the main town of Umbria and the principal city of the province of Perugia. Since the time of the Etruscans as one of the 12 cities of the Etruscan confederation. Assisi is a town in the province of Perugia which is in the list of World Heritage - UNESCO. Affected by two devastating earthquakes in September 1997, the city was completely rebuilt and restored. Assisi is a center of religious tourism and attracts many pilgrims as the birthplace of St. Francis - patron saint of Italy.
The common application of PerugiAssizi 2019, connects the ideals of Aldo Kapitini (First organized a peaceful march to Assisi) and St. Francis. "Peace, Solidarity and the search for the common good" - this is a project for the future, built on the basis of differences between the two cities and dialogue between different institutions.
The logo application is selected after a competition in June 2011 and it represents a butterfly that flies to Europe and symbolizes the relationship between the two cities.
In June 2013 Sofia and South-West Region 2019 signed a memorandum with Perugia-Assisi 2019.
